Hitting the beach may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you are planning a trip to Finland. It might comes as a surprise, therefore, that you can really enjoy the beach life in Helsinki when the summer comes around.

Beaches in and around Helsinki
Outside the city centre, there
For instance, the beaches in the eastern districts of the city make it hard to imagine that you are in a highly-populated metropolitan area.
Try the one at Kallahdenniemi for starters, down at the end of a gravel path fringed with spruce trees. Buses no. 560 and 816 will get you there from the Vuosaari metro station.
From the Vuosaari metro station, you can also get to the Aurinkolahti beach. A three-minute bus ride fon bus no. 90 takes you there.
Aurinkolahti is informally known as the “Riviera of Helsinki” and is a nice place to visit on a sunny day. A 700-meter swimming beach and a marina are two of Aurinkolahti’s best features.
Pikkukoski
The Pikkukoski swimming beach, which is arguably Helsinki’s most interesting beach, is not by the sea at all. It is located on the banks of the Vantaa River, in the district known as Oulunkylä.
You can get there from downtown by bus or by train in around 45 minutes. After walking down a somewhat steep hill, you’ll meet an impressive sight: the river makes a small bay in the shelter of a high rock outcrop.

Swimming Pools
The beach is not your only option for a refreshing swim in the city. You can head to the Helsinki Swimming Stadium, which is a popular outdoor swimming venue near the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Alternatively, you can visit the Kumpula Outdoor Swimming Pool, which was built as a practice pool for the 1952 Summer Olympics.
If you are looking for something special, try the Allas Sea Pool, an outdoor pool complex located a stone’s throw away from the Helsinki marketplace.
